Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and is stunning. It is full of things to do and ways to fill your days. This post will review the top 5 attractions you won’t want to miss in Prague. Don’t get me wrong, there is more to explore, but if you are on a restricted schedule then these should shoot to the top of your “must-do” list. 

One nice thing is that these top attractions in Prague are all near each other or at least can be easily nested together for a quick trip. I recommend spending at least 3 days in Prague, but you can see all of these in as little as one day if you really push it.

5 Top Attractions in Prague

The Charles Bridge

This Gothic bridge is the oldest bridge in Prague. It was severely damaged in floods in 1342 and was then rebuilt by Charles IV starting in 1357. Each end is flanked by tall towers and the bridge is limited to pedestrian traffic. 

Along the bridge, you will find detailed statues and can get great views of both sides of the river. The bridge leads to the castle from Prague’s old town (district 1). 

To avoid crowds, I recommend getting to the bridge early in the morning. It can become packed with people later in the day. 

Prague’s Astronomical Clock

Astronomical clocks are unique in that they show the location of different types of astronomical objects. The position of the sun, moon, certain constellations, and sometimes even planets can be tracked with astronomical clocks. Prague’s astronomical clock is over 600 years old and is one of the few that remain in the world. It is made even more unique by the presence of twelve moving apostles that cycle each hour. It also has a dial that moves to represent the current month of the year. 

The astronomical clock in Prague is one of the last in the world. One unique feature of this clock is that it shows all 24 hours of the day along with the tracking of different celestial objects like the sun and moon. Located on the Southern side of the old town hall in the old city center, the clock is probably the top-photographed attraction in Prague.

When we visited first visited the clock, it was midday and the area was crowded with tourists capturing photos in front of the stunning clock. We passed by the following morning when there were much fewer people around and were able to capture some photos. 

Prague Castle

When you cross over the Charles Bridge from the historic center you are headed in the direction of Prague Castle. It is located at the top of the hill, so be ready for a bit of a climb if you are walking. 

If referencing the Guinness Book of World Records, you will find it noted that Prague Castle is the largest castle in the world coming in at 70,000m^2. It is a UNESCO world heritage site over 1,000 years old and estimated to have been built in the year 880. The complex shows an eclectic mix of different architectural styles. 

We did not do the paid entrance to specific exhibitions, but there are plenty of places you can explore for free. The exterior of the cathedral is detailed and beautiful. There are many buildings making up the castle and it is also surrounded by beautiful gardens. 

The Prague Castle is probably Prague’s top attraction in the Czech Republic. Due to it being so high above the river, there are wonderful views of the city.

Lennon Wall

When we visited Prague, we were lucky enough to just stumble across the Lennon Wall. It is an ever-changing wall of street art that is meant to represent peace, love, and freedom. In the 1980s, after the death of John Lennon, graffiti began to cover the wall with Beatles lyrics, a portrait of John Lennon, and political messages. The wall has changed drastically over the years with countless layers of graffiti. It now mainly focuses on messages of peace and love, leaving politics out. 

The wall draws a large number of tourists. It is easily accessible from the Charles Bridge and is free of charge. Be ready for crowds as visitors from around the world admire the wall and capture photos.

Old Town Square/Historic Center

This old square is a must-see attraction in Prague. Although you will encounter many other tourists, it is well worth a bit of time for exploring. It also leads to the Charles Bridge, another top attraction in Prague. 

The square is home to the astronomical clock and many old buildings. There are numerous restaurants and shops to keep you fed and entertained. The Old Town Hall is where you will find the astronomical clock and you are able to enter the building after purchasing a ticket. 

The ticket allows entry to the historic and beautiful interior of the building which dates back to 1338. There is a 70m high tower which you can climb and observe some of the best views of the old town square. One of my regrets about visiting Prague is not taking advantage of seeing the interior of the Old Town Hall. 

Seeing Prague’s top attractions in one day

It is possible to see these top attractions in Prague in one day. The great thing is that they are in relatively close proximity to each other. Beginning at the Old Town Square you can find your way to the Charles Bridge which leads you across the river toward both the Lennon Wall and the castle. The Prague Castle is easy to see from the bridge as it overlooks the city from its perch above the city. It is only a short detour to the Lennon Wall. 

This is just a small taste of what there is to enjoy in Prague. Prague is full of attractions and lesser-known gems. It is one of my favorite European cities.
