Is Prague Worth Visiting? What to See, Eat, and Drink in Prague

Hello to all of our friends, family, and fellow adventurers! I am so very excited to be writing this post about our recent adventure to Prague. Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and is an AMAZING city! If you are wondering if it is worth a visit, if it should jump into that itinerary you are making, then I would have to say yes! I highly encourage anyone and everyone to pay a visit to this epic city. Prague is an incredibly beautiful city full of culture, beauty, and history. 

Many people visit Prague and spend most of their time in the Old Town, otherwise known as Prague 1. Let me tell you a secret: there is so much more to the city than the popular sites in this area. Don’t get me wrong, visiting places like the Astronomical Clock and  wandering  down the old streets is super cool, but there is so much more to the city than just this area. 

Going Off the Beaten Path

One really cool thing we did on our first full day was to take a walking tour. It wasn’t just any regular tour either. We got to visit many places off the beaten path such as seeing street art, cafes, and bars. We had such a great experience that we ended up going back to some of the places that we visited on the tour. I found it on getyourguide.com and it is the Prague: Alternative Prague Walking Tour. If you do this tour, be aware that you will be taking public transport several times and will need to buy your own tickets, but don’t worry, public transport is super affordable in Prague. 

Where to Enjoy a Beer and\or Coffee in Prague

Stage Bar 

Located on Strelecky Ostrov, an island that can be accessed when crossing the Legion bridge, you will find the Stage Bar. Surrounded by a green and tree-filled park, this is a peaceful bar where you can escape the crowds. There are places for kids to play and large tables to sit and take a load off. When you purchase a beer, the first glass will require a 100cz deposit, if you turn the glass back in when you finish, you will get that deposit back.  

Bullerbyn

I don’t know exactly how I would classify this spot. You can enjoy a beer, raspberry lemonade, or a bowl of soup. You can also indulge in other local foods that can also be prepared vegetarian or vegan. It became one of our favorite places to sit back, relax, and read a book. Patrons would come in and set up shop with their computers, meet with friends, and enjoy the unique ambiance. 

This is the first place we tried mushroom-and-dill soup and it was a delight. When we got home I found a recipe and made it right away. While here you are surrounded by plants, books, board games, and other unique items like taxidermied eagles. It was definitely a fun find. 

Duendre

Located near the river, this bar is more centralized than the others we found. It was still a fun little find. It may be frequented by tourists, but it has a cool local vibe. You can get some vegetarian snacks along with other food, but I can’t promise the food is as delicious as the beer. 

Tiki Taky Bar

This bar was a diamond in the rough! Andrew happened to find it while we debated what to do one night. It took a tram ride and it doesn’t stand out against the street other than a small sign, but once you enter, you are greeted by bright and eclectic tiki decorations. The staff is friendly and the menu extensive. It may seem a strange choice for a trip to the Czech Republic, but it is well worth it. We spent a couple of hours enjoying our tropical drinks served in classic tiki glasses. 

Where to have Breakfast in Prague

Bistro Lovely Day

A quaint cafe located in Prague 7, this little café serves a wide selection of baked goods along with delightful breakfasts and lunch items. I enjoyed a delicious open faced sandwich that was topped with so many scrumptious ingredients. Andrew was also a fan of his omelette. The bistro is cozy and cute. It is easily accessible by public transport and is also located by one of the beautiful bars we visited on our walking tour. 

Café Letka

This was such a lucky find! It was worth the hike we took to get there, even though I am sure that there was easy public transport. I also got us a little bit lost, whoops! It was our first morning in Prague and not only was the food fantastic, but we met a really fun couple at the communal table. The service is a bit slow, but the food was worth it. The menu was limited, but that was okay for us as it had vegetarian options. There is a large selection of drinks to choose from. The ambiance is so cute and I fell in love with the atmosphere. Make sure to get there early as it does get crowded, especially on Saturdays! 

Mezi Srnky

Another small café off the beaten path. The tables are communal and the space is small, but the food is super yummy. The servers/baristas were really nice and kindly answered any questions. Even in the non-touristy areas, most residents speak English which is very handy for us as Czech is definitely not a language I am familiar with.

Popular Not-to-Miss Sights in Prague 

Astronomical Clock

Okay, so it wasn’t as big as I had thought it would be, but it was still cool. It is located in Prague 1 in the heart of the hustle and bustle. You will almost always find a crowd capturing photos of the famous clock. It is the oldest functioning astronomical clock in the world and is attached to the old town hall. It is over 600 years old! 

Charles Bridge

This famous bridge crosses the Vltava River and is what famously connects Old Town Prague with the castle. It is a walking-only bridge and gets very crowded with tourists headed to and from the castle. We crossed it early in the morning on our way to breakfast and we had it almost all to ourselves. It is a beautiful bridge and you will see detailed sculptures as you cross. 

Lennon Wall

One of the most visited sites in Prague, the Lennon Wall is ever changing with messages and art. It is a wall that is now primarily dedicated to peace and love. I found it to be a powerful installation of art where people have been able to share messages through words and paintings that depict the importance of love and peace in the world. If you have visited the wall in the past, you will most likely find that it has changed and morphed over time. 

Off-the-Beaten Path Sights in Prague

The Prague Zoo

I am an animal lover, I am obsessed with all things related to animals. I have worked with animals for nearly all of my life and they are what make my heart happy. Therefore, I wanted to visit the Prague Zoo. It is one of the most famous zoos in Europe and after visiting, I could see why. The exhibits are beautiful and full of natural aspects as well as enrichment for the animals. One of the highlights of our visit was seeing the first baby pangolin born in Europe! That was very special as they are a critically endangered species. 

We spent several hours exploring all of the nooks and crannies of the zoo; everywhere you looked there was a new animal to see. It seemed that it was frequented mostly by locals and had many spots for children to play. There is an exhibit where you can walk amongst the lemurs, but be aware, they are only out at certain times of the day. They will soon be renovating the polar bear exhibit to make it even better for the bears. I look forward to visiting in the future and seeing the new and improved exhibit. 

It is quite easy to take public transport to the zoo. We just hopped on a tram and then a bus from where we started our day. 

Strelecky Ostrov (Island)

One morning we accidentally took a wrong turn and crossed the Most Leggii bridge. This was a lucky accident as the bridge passes over the island. I noted that you could access the island and it had a little outdoor café and bar. We later made our way back and it was a blast. I know I already mentioned this island in a past section, but we enjoyed it so much it was worth another mention. 

Kocici Kavarna (Cat Café)

While mindlessly wandering the streets looking for lunch outside the tourist traps I found this epic gem. Andrew says I may just have a cat radar as I also randomly found a cat café in Edinburgh. I was reading the sign with no rhyme or reason other than to find a menu when I saw it mention free roaming cats. Score! When they eventually had space for us, we enjoyed coffee, cake, and catatonic cats. I was ecstatic to get my cat fix. Although I am sure most of the visitors were tourists, for us it was a random off the beaten path find. 

Prague is Worth Visiting

From the best public transportation in the world to the beauty of natural parks and architecture, we loved Prague. The locals are kind, speak English, and are overall just cool. There is a very large expat population as well. Prague has something for everyone and I can’t stop raving about it to anyone who will listen. In short, Prague is worth visiting.
